Our Mural
Hand painted by local artist Dan Kenyon @dkartwork90
Our fishing roots run deep so when I first saw this space, I knew I wanted something bold but meaningful on this blank wall — something that truly honored the reason we’ve found ourselves in the seafood business in the first place.
It all traces back to the Stonington Borough Fishing Docks. My great-grandfather, Antone “Billy” Roderick, was one of the first commercial fishermen to work these waters — and one of the best. I grew up hearing countless stories about Voo Billy from my dad John, the “J” in J&R — how he was not only a skilled fisherman but also the guiding force in our family's life. But most of all he was a man known for his kindness, generosity and hard work ethic.
Because of his legacy, spending time around the docks felt natural. That’s why it was so important to honor him in this mural—placing his fishing vessel, The Rita, named after my grandmother, front and center, making its way home.
Another important element of the mural is the boat Lindy, Inc.—a commercial lobster boat that worked out of the Stonington Docks for over 20 years. It belonged to my dad’s best friend Richie, the "R" in J&R, whose family, like ours, was born and raised on these docks. John and Richie’s strong ties to the local fishing industry have been instrumental in shaping our connections and ability to source some of the best seafood in the area. Though the Lindy Inc. is no longer in operation the bond they built through their shared upbringing in Stonington —and their deep fishing roots—has carried on and remains a driving force for their wholesale business and for me to be able to own and operate J&R Seafood Market + Off The Hook today.
